Descriptions and Prerequisites
1.
INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS
Description:
Explains basic parts of the computer; differences between
hardware and software; how to properly turn the computer on/off;
how to properly hold and use the mouse; how to
click/double-click/drag; defines a window; how to open/close/
minimize/maximize/ resize/move windows; how to use the scroll
bar; basic keyboard functions.
Required skills:
None. If you don’t know how to do some or all of the above,
this is the class for you!!
2.
FILE MANAGEMENT LEVEL I (SAVING AND RETRIEVING FILES)
Description:
Defines files/folders/drives; explains differences between
floppy drives, hard drives, USB drives, CD ROM drives; how to
save/retrieve a file.
Required skills:
Must be able to click and double-click with the mouse; must be
able to open and close programs by double clicking on icons;
must be able to use the scroll bar and menus. If you do not have
these skills, Introduction to Computers is highly recommended
prior to taking this class.
3.
FILE MANAGEMENT LEVEL II
Description:
Selecting files; deleting files; selecting multiple files for
delete, etc.; dragging and dropping files; cut, copy, and paste
operations; managing open windows for file copy and transfer;
using browse buttons; downloading and saving files.
Prerequisites:
File Management Level I.
4. INTERNET LEVEL I
Description:
Basic terminology; how to visit a web site using the address
bar; how to browse through pages using links; using the Back and
Forward buttons; viewing and clearing recent browser history;
using a search engine to find web sites; changing your home
page; setting favorite websites.
Required skills:
Must be able to click and double-click with the mouse; must be
able to open and close programs by double clicking on icons;
must be able to use the scroll bar and menus. If you do not have
these skills, Introduction to Computers is highly recommended
prior to taking this class.
5. EMAIL
Description:
Definitions; types of email accounts and
advantages/disadvantages of each; how to configure a mail client
to send/receive email; how to check for new email, send email,
reply to email, forward emails, delete emails, attach files
(pictures) to emails.
Required skills:
Must be able to click and double-click with the mouse; must be
able to open and close programs by double clicking on icons;
must be able to use the scroll bar and menus. If you do not have
these skills, Introduction to Computers is highly recommended
prior to taking this class. In addition, Internet I will be
helpful prior to taking this class.
6. BEST OF THE WEB I
Description:
A
survey of some of the best web sites on the internet along with
brief instructions in how to make the most of each one.
Prerequisites:
Internet Level I or comparable experience using the internet.
7. EBAY AND INTERNET SHOPPING
Description:
Defining ebay; registering to get started with Ebay; how to buy
on Ebay; how to sell on Ebay; understanding Paypal; introduction
to other ecommerce sites like Amazon and Walmart.
Prerequisites:
Internet Level I or comparable experience using the internet.
8. INTRODUCTION TO MICROSOFT WORD
Description:
Basic text editing using the keyboard (delete, backspace, etc.);
how to save and retrieve a document; how to select text for
formatting; how to format (bold, italics, underline, resize,
etc.) text; how to cut, copy, and paste text; printing; setting
margins; aligning (left, right, center) text.
Required skills:
Must be able to click and double-click with the mouse; must be
able to open and close programs by double clicking on icons;
must be able to use the scroll bar and menus. If you do not have
these skills, Introduction to Computers is highly recommended
prior to taking this class.
9. EXCEL
Description:
Microsoft Excel is a program that consists entirely of columns
and rows. These columns and rows can be used as the basis for
any task that requires a table (like a family budget, student
grades, statistics, etc.). In this class you will learn the most
commonly used formulas and how to “decorate” your table with
borders, shading, color, etc.
Required skills:
Must be able to click and double-click with the mouse; must be
able to open and close programs by double clicking on icons;
must be able to use the scroll bar and menus. If you do not have
these skills, Introduction to Computers is highly recommended
prior to taking this class.
10. DIGITAL PHOTO EDITING
Description:
The
basics of taking digital photographs including files, file
sizes, and pixel concentration. How to transfer pictures from a
digital camera to a computer. How to make basic corrections to
digital photos including brightening, contrast, cropping,
adjusting file size, etc. How to email pictures as attachments.
Required skills:
Must be able to click and double-click with the mouse; must be
able to open and close programs by double clicking on icons;
must be able to use the scroll bar and menus. If you do not have
these skills, Introduction to Computers is highly recommended
prior to taking this class. Also, if you have a digital camera
and data cable, you should bring it to this class, along with
fresh batteries.
